From idea to Launch Pad: a morning of high-stakes enterprise at Highgate Hill

Students at Highgate Hill threw themselves into the Young Enterprise “Launch Pad” workshop and proved exactly what the next generation of innovators are capable of. In just one morning, students went from a blank canvas to fully pitched business concepts.

The workshop was made possible thanks to the support from Ariel Re as part of their incredible 20for20 initiative, bringing invaluable practical learning and employer encounters directly to our young people.

The students were split into teams, immediately taking on the responsibility of buying and developing a brand-new business. To say they hit the ground running is an understatement. During the session, the teams:

  • Secured the money: worked out complex finances and stood before an Investor to pitch for and secure a business loan
  • Branded from scratch: came up with unique company names, designed logos, and crafted catchy slogans
  • Marketed to win: developed products, mapped out a marketing plan, and organised a high-energy launch event
  • The final pitch: concluded the morning by writing and presenting a high-pressure, two-minute pitch to their peers and volunteer panel

The sheer variety of ideas was brilliant. The classes we worked with developed concepts ranging from a photographic company to a sports shop, and even a mobile phone shop.

Unleashing real-world skills

While the students were busy having a great time building their business empires, they were also unlocking crucial employability skills that employers are desperately looking for. Throughout the morning, they put their teamwork and problem-solving to the test, as they developed their financial capability.

Raising aspirations

The Launch Pad workshop was delivered by Young Enterprise, a charity with a mission that is all about delivering practical, applied learning experiences, raising aspirations, and preparing young people for the rapidly changing world of work. By introducing relatable role models and powerful partnerships, Young Enterprise helps students build an enterprising mindset.

Our pupils completely grasped the challenge, worked beautifully together, and were an absolute credit to the school. It was an empowering, inspiring morning for students, educators, and volunteers alike.

A huge thank you to the students for their energy, the volunteers for their insights, and Ariel Re for making it all happen. The future of business is looking very bright.
