Highgate Hill pupils share their views on social media ban on Channel 5 news

What do young people think about the UK government’s proposed ban on social media for under-16s? In this video, several Highgate Hill students share their views on the issue, discussing both the benefits and drawbacks of social media and whether a ban is the right solution.

The discussion was filmed as part of an interview for a national television news programme, giving students the opportunity to contribute their perspectives to a wider public conversation on a topic that directly affects young people.

The students interviewed recognised that social media can help people stay connected and build communities. One student explained, “I don’t think a ban should be the move that the UK Government should be doing because I believe that brings many pros such as allowing communities to get together, friends to communicate and sharing their hobbies and interests.”

At the same time, students were honest about the challenges that social media can create. One student highlighted its addictive nature, saying that “five more minutes” of scrolling can easily become “hours and hours”, while another noted that social media can make it harder for students to focus and maintain their attention.

Some students also reflected on the impact social media can have on wellbeing. One student spoke about the pressures of comparison online and how it had affected their mental health, while another raised concerns about young people being exposed to adult-like content at an early age.

Although opinions differed on whether a ban would be effective, many students agreed that parents, schools and technology companies all have a role to play in helping young people use social media safely.

We are incredibly proud of the students who took part in this national TV news interview. They spoke with confidence, maturity and thoughtfulness on a topic that directly affects their generation, demonstrating excellent communication skills and a willingness to engage with complex issues. Their contributions reflect the curiosity, critical thinking and respect for different viewpoints that we value at Highgate Hill.
