Legally you do have the right to withdraw your child from RE, however if you would like to do so, please book a meeting with our Principal as we believe it is an important subject for all to study. Religious Education within the UK curriculum nurtures students through a deliberate and thoughtful process that cultivates critical thinking. It encourages them to ponder their spiritual beliefs, values, and behaviour. This educational discipline lays the groundwork for thriving in a diverse society and explores profound existential questions. By promoting open-mindedness and imparting knowledge, students are equipped to engage in sophisticated discussions regarding contemporary ethical dilemmas. They are also trained in evaluative and analytical thinking, which are at the core of our educational mission.
Religious Education empowers students with the capacity to apply these skills in addressing moral dilemmas and making choices that will shape their future as adults. The primary objective of this course is not to instil religious beliefs in students but to enable them to independently contemplate matters of religion and morality. Its aim is to prepare them for the complexities of life ahead. This underscores the importance of backwards planning, beginning with critical thinking and ethical decision-making skills as foundational elements that will ultimately guide students towards a well-rounded and informed perspective on “spiritual, religious and moral issues”, thereby preparing them for the journey ahead in life.
Post-16 Progression:
Religious Studies/Education equips students with a well-rounded skill set, enabling them to engage with abstract concepts and showcase their proficiency in leadership and research. These competencies serve as a strong foundation, not only for further academic pursuits but also for success in their future endeavours. Beyond the GCSE level, numerous opportunities beckon for the study of Religion, Theology, Philosophy, and Ethics, facilitating the pursuit of higher learning.
Career opportunities:
Religious Education is a gateway to a diverse array of career options, offering essential skills highly sought after in today’s professional landscape. The critical thinking and comparative analysis skills provide the essential tools needed to thrive in the contemporary workforce. Examples of potential career paths include Child and Youth Worker, Clergy, Activist, Charity Coordinator, Teacher, Author, Community Developer, Administrative Coordinator, Political Consultant, Entrepreneur, Foreign Service Worker, Media Correspondent, Human Rights Advocate, and more.
