YEAR 7 – Students begin their geographical study close to home, by learning about the human and physical geography of the UK. Through this unit, students are introduced to a range of key skills, laying the foundation for the rest of their geographical careers. Lessons are designed to explore the underpinning concepts of place, space and sustainability within the UK, building on locational knowledge that is developed through Key Stages 1 and 2 and preparing students to explore these concepts in a global context throughout the rest of Key Stage 3 and beyond.
The Year 7 curriculum is broken down into the following components:
Autumn 1 – introduction to the UK
Autumn 2 – Physical landscapes of the UK
Spring 1 – Weather and climate in the UK
Spring 2 – People of the UK
Summer 1 – Work, rest and play in the UK
Summer 2 – Challenges and opportunities in the UK
YEAR 8 – In Year 8, students continue to develop their understanding of place, space and sustainability; lessons begin to explore the ways in which these concepts can be applied within
In Year 8 we still aim to revisit the skills and build upon the knowledge developed and mastered in Year 7. The focus this year is to incorporate global issues and environments, both in physical and human geography, whereas we looked at geographical issues in Year 7 within the UK only.
The Year 8 curriculum is broken down into the following components:
Autumn 1 – Our physical world
Autumn 2 – Our living world
Spring 1 – Our unequal world
Spring 2 – Focus on Africa
Summer 1 – World cities
Summer 2 – Global issues
YEAR 9 – In year 9 we focus on geographical skills and revisit the human and physical environment of our planet. Students develop their understanding of the climate, biome and human features of Brazil, with a focus of urban change in Rio de Janeiro; The Philippines with a focus of weather hazards and finally Nigeria with a focus on development.
Autumn term – Brazil
Spring term – The Philippines
Summer term – Nigeria
