Product Design
Year 7 – MDF Wood Bookend
Introduction to basic skills, health and safety expectation for this subject. Knowledge of using tools and equipment to complete project.
Year 8 – Desk Tidy
Building on skills learnt from Yr7. We focus on working with MDF/plastic for this project. Students show their creativity using the movements Bauhaus, Pop Art, and Art Nouveau as an inspiration to create their designs using 2D Design. We consider the environment and explore ways to be more friendly by choosing sustainable materials when creating our project work of others.
Year 9 – Metal Pewter casting, Jewellery/ Badge/ and Keyring
Learning about the Art Movement Art Deco- it’s origin, characteristics and design influence. Rendering drawings to look like metals. Developing knowledge on types of metals. Development of CAD skills. Technical/high quality practical skills to cast metal jewellery. Skills to create a high quality metal finish. Evaluation skills against specification. Building knowledge on materials and processes.
Textiles
Year 7 – Ugly Doll
Students develop skills in embroidery, applique and CAD/CAM processes to produce an ‘Ugly Doll’, with inspiration taken from a range of sources including the unconventional costumes of the Bauhaus movement.
Year 8 – Cultural Cushion
Students build on the skills they have developed in year 7 in embroidery and applique and develop further knowledge of surface decoration techniques through exploration of Japanese Shibori, batik and sublimation printing to produce a cushion inspired by their chosen culture. Students develop knowledge or motifs and patterns and learn how to develop their own repeat pattern.
Year 9 – Upcycled Shirt
Students explore sustainability within textiles and create an upcycled shirt inspired by a given theme. Students must build on the skills learnt in year 8 to incorporate surface decoration and develop new skills in garment construction, free machine embroidery, patchwork and Japanese Boro.
Food Studies
Year 7 – Healthy Eating
Importance of working in a safe and hygienic way is taught as a base for Yr7 Foods. They are introduced to basic tools and equipment and taught how to use them effectively and safely. Dishes prepared as based on the Eatwell Guide using basic cooking skills.
Year 8 – Afternoon Tea
Students are introduced to a revered British Tradition. Through this they will gain skills in bread making, pastry making, different methods of cake making, presentation techniques. It also gives an insight into the GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition as they will have an understanding of the function of the various ingredients used the products they make. They will get the opportunity to showcase their products through planning and presenting an Afternoon Tea to friends and staff. The importance of working safely and hygienically is also continuously embedded throughout.
Year 9 – Mini NEAs
In Yr9 students are introduced to Mini NEAs to help them get prepared for GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition. For NEA1 they learn about the functional/chemical properties of different types of raising agents by researching and carrying investigations. They also make various products using some of these raising agents. For NEA2 students get the opportunity to learn about various cultural foods. Some drawing from their own cultural knowledge whether from family, friends or travelling. They create a display for their chosen country along with a variety of dishes.
Homework
Homework is set weekly and includes research, investigation, designing and development. Individual pieces of homework will be given a written comment and targets for improvement.
Curriculum Enrichment
Students are encouraged to take part in after school activities such as Cookery Club, Textiles clubs and Workshop sessions.
Essential Materials
Graphics equipment: ruler 30cm, pencil, rubber, compass, a set of good quality colouring pencils (felt tip pens are not used in Design and Technology) and a fineliner pen.
